Purdy has been on the shelf since injuring his right big toe. This injury was sustained in a heartbreaking loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4. He originally hurt himself when they played the Seattle Seahawks early in the season. He succeeded in making a short comeback, but he re-injured the damaged ligaments.

Purdy made it clear that surgery was not an option with his injury, which speaks highly of him wanting to fully recover from the injury. The 49ers’ coaching staff chose not to put him on IR. This was just so that they could see which way his toe will be treated in practices. This decision is indicative of their optimism about his potential return as well as the priority that they place on getting him back on the field.

In the meantime over the course of practice this week, Purdy showed it in a big way. He was only a limited participant on Wednesday but jumped up to a full participant by Thursday. He handled the majority of the reps with the starting offense. That would indicate that the team is planning on getting him back soon as their starting quarterback.

When looking at his recovery, Purdy was optimistic, saying he’s feeling “really good” and healthy. “I’m excited to be back, ready to go, and lead the team,” he said. He would like to assume the starting position and run with it. This confidence not only highlights his confidence in his physical state but belief that he can make a dramatic impact on the team’s fortunes.

Purdy’s return has been keenly awaited, not least due to the promising form he showed before the injury. He has the 12th best QBR among quarterbacks this season at 65.1. Under his leadership, the 49ers had a 5-3 record in games with him starting. This achievement really magnifies his importance to the team as they work through their current struggles.

The franchise signal caller also used his platform to thank Mac Jones, who has filled in while Purdy’s been out. He credited Jones for having the team competitive and on the same page, and valued their partnership. “I absolutely love Mac Jones and what he has done,” Purdy noted. Their dynamic is jaw-dropping. Purdy believes that the two of them together as a dynamic duo have just scratched the surface of their potential.
