With the NFL season now at its apex, the race for the ever-desired No. 1 draft pick picks up steam. The Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders, and New Orleans Saints all find themselves in contention, each with distinct needs and strategies. These teams have the power to write their own futures. They are about to make crucial decisions that will determine their direction for years to come.
The Browns remain atop the table with a commanding 36.6% probability of receiving the No. 1 selection. That statistic is based on the most recent Football Power Index (FPI) projections. They do have an incredibly friendly schedule set up before them. Having five of their last eight matches at home, they have a fantastic opportunity to capitalize on this chance. The Titans are right behind, having the best odds for landing the first overall pick. At the same time, the Jets have their sights set on drafting an athletic quarterback that can add a dynamic element to their new offense.
Cleveland Browns: Balancing Future Goals with Present Performance
The Browns have already jumped to the head of the class for the first overall pick in 2017. Even their baseline 36.6% FPI chance is a tribute to how far they’ve overachieved this season. An incredibly favorable fixture list moving forward only adds to their chances. This gives the Browns a favorable end to the season schedule-wise, as they’ll play five of their final eight contests at home. This creates an amazing opportunity for them to pad their record and improve their draft position.
The team’s management is, at the moment, in the midst of a key decision point in terms of their franchise quarterback. The performance of Justin Fields will significantly impact whether they choose to utilize the No. 1 pick on a quarterback or address other areas of need. If Fields demonstrates consistent growth and efficiency, the Browns may opt to strengthen their defense or bolster their offensive line instead.
Joining the drama is the willingness of the Browns’ defense to backstop a rookie passer. A strong showing from their defensive unit could provide the necessary support for a young quarterback, allowing for a smoother transition and a promising future.
Tennessee Titans: A Strategic Approach to Drafting
As the Tennessee Titans as of this writing have the best odds of landing the No. 1 overall pick, that opens up some unique opportunities for Tennessee. They face a pivotal choice: either select the best non-quarterback available or trade the pick for an array of valuable draft assets. This flexibility could allow them to reshape their roster significantly, depending on how they assess their current needs versus long-term goals.
The Titans are similarly situated, in a position to build up their new QB of the future, currently presumed to be Washington State’s Cam Ward. As they evaluate the best use of their draft capital, they must consider whether to enhance their offensive weaponry or strengthen their defense. Tennessee has not selected an edge rusher in the first round since Derrick Morgan in 2010. All of which makes an obvious opportunity to add depth behind pitchers like Noah Syndergaard and Joe Musgrove defensively.
Miami defensive end Rueben Bain Jr has quietly become one of the best prospects. Offer him up, and the Titans could bite on him if they choose to go defense with their first selection. His athleticism and skill set combined give him the potential to be a very tantalizing pick as they continue to try to add talent to their defense.
New York Jets: A Focus on Mobility and Future Success
Or that the New York Jets are tanking for a No. They’re looking to lock up their next franchise quarterback who will lead them through their eventual relocation. Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn knows how imperative it is to face a mobile quarterback. He knows that adaptability is the key to success in today’s ever-changing game.
At the moment, Geno Smith is not considered a long-term answer at QB for New York. Among all the football players being considered, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza stands out. His accuracy, timing and poise from the pocket make him a highly appealing prospect. As a result, Mendoza has become the clear first-choice senior QB prospect. Any team looking to make an investment in a talented quarterback has a realistic option in him.
As the Jets’ 2023 season continues, they’ll have to decide what to do with the pick they should be getting. Hold on to Mendoza, and they’ll have a promising foundation to find success. This change would free them up to really double down on areas like proposal quality that require significant progress.
Las Vegas Raiders: Addressing Defensive Deficiencies
As the Raiders aim to improve their position heading into the draft, they face pressing concerns regarding their pass rush. So far this season, their pass rush has produced the 25th-most sacks and 30th-highest pressure rate in the entire league. That’s why reinforcing this area is so important to their success.
The Raiders will need to focus on defensive talent, but needs can sometimes be improved with scheme and coaching. There are some very intriguing options going into the draft, especially among the edge rushers. This creates an enticing opportunity for any team inside the top 10 to grab their guy, a defender who can instantly impact their defensive front.
This emphasis on defense is crucial as Las Vegas looks to build upon their inaugural season success and contend further up the standings. By investing in a strong pass rusher through the draft or free agency, they can create more pressure on opposing quarterbacks and enhance their defensive performance.
New Orleans Saints: Aiming High with Quarterback Aspirations
The other team with at least a 5% FPI chance to finish with the No. 1 pick is the New Orleans Saints, who stand at 9.7%. They’re still in the process of evaluating possible QB options. Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler are just two of the names they’re targeting to add talent to one of the top rosters.
Given the ambiguity of their present quarterback scenario, landing someone from the worldwide of blue-chip prospects could be a game-changer for the Saints. Both Shough and Rattler have had their moments during college play and could come right in and make an immediate impact at the professional level.
While the Saints will ultimately determine which prospects fit best to their system, it is imperative that they gather and accurately assess talent. Pinpointing how to improve the group’s collective play will prove the most important.
