Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans rejoiced after their team pulled off a nail-biting win against the Punjab Kings. They defeated Chennai Super Kings by 7 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The battle at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was a nail biter. RCB’s captain, Virat Kohli, had a big night as he prepped his team to chase down a daunting target of 158 runs.
Punjab Kings won the toss and opted to bat first, setting a massive target of 157 runs. They only lost six wickets in their allotted 20 overs. The team’s leading run-scorer in the match was Prabhsimran Singh, who could only score 33 runs. The Punjab Kings, after a predictable enough beginning, duly contrived to have a dramatic turnaround in the middle overs. Suyash Sharma had two important breakthroughs, taking the wickets of Australians Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis in the 14th over. During this crucial juncture, Punjab fell to 114-6, leaving them to chase a competitive target.
In reply, RCB opted to start their innings on the front foot. Virat Kohli took control of the game with an attacking innings of 73 runs in 54 deliveries. This sparkling knock was his fourth half-century in a row! Kohli’s innings was studded with 11 boundaries and showcased his ability to anchor the chase. Second, he was fortunate to have Devdutt Padikkal deliver an MVP-level performance right next to him. Tewatia had scored 68 runs off 49 balls when Harpreet Brar caught him out.
The diamond in the rough for RCB’s batting order was the 2nd wicket pact between captain Kohli and young as ever Padikkal, curating a stiff 103-run score. Their combined efforts were essential in guiding RCB to a convincing 137-run victory, and left-armers Rashid and Samad took turns demolishing the Punjab bowling attack.
Thanks to this victory, RCB climbed the points table in the league. They have won seven of their nine games. This unrelenting form has taken them to 3rd place in the table on net run-rate, overtaking the Punjab Kings. The game highlighted RCB’s depth of character and tactical nous as they ride the wave in search of a first ever trophy.
